A split or division in a church, primarily due to difference of opinion over doctrine. The Great Schism, or Schism of the West, was when there was conflict and division in the Roman Catholic Church between 1378 to 1417, during which time there were rival popes at Avignon and Rome. The Schism of the East took place when the Orthodox Eastern Church officially split from the Roman Catholic Church in 1472.

        I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel -- which is really no gospel at all.
